If you’re a foodie or simply love healthy vegan food and an abundance of the ripest fruits and veggies, Tel Aviv is the place to be! Tel Aviv counts to the top 10 vegan cities world wide (#8) and Israel itself has the highest percentage of vegans globally, with an estimated 5-8% of the whole Israeli population being vegan (a huge majority of which are residing in TLV). The city features over 25+ fully vegan restaurants with new ones popping up every week and above 400+ vegan friendly places! Vegan paradise if you ask me! 🙂
After my last visit to Tel Aviv I’ve decided to assemble a quick food guide and feature my 5 top places to eat healthy & vegan in Tel Aviv.
Anastasia was the first vegan cafe in Tel Aviv and it’s one of my absolute favorites. I used to live in the same street for about 2 months and obviously have been visiting this places very frequently during that time. It is known for its amazing breakfast spreads, has an amazing vegan cheeze platter and includes tons of yummy vegan goodies. I can highly recommend the sautéed greens with tofu, cashew sour cream and homemade pesto for a healthy twist. For more decadent munching with a group of people try the breakfast spreads, cheeze platter and the tiramisu – it’s amazing! 🙂 They also sell a variety of goodies in the shop, including my favorite vegan chocolate brand ‘iChoc’, vegan cookbooks and so much more, so make sure you have a look inside. If you’re a freelancer or work online you will find that this place is equally great to sit down, have yourself a yummy smoothie and get some work done!

I only got to know Meshek Barzilay a few months ago when my dear friend Moran showed it to me, and I immediately fell in love! It is an organic vegetarian and vegan restaurant located in the middle of the beautiful Neve Tzedek district. They serves everything your heart desires, ranging from an amazing pizza, to lasagna, cashew cheeses, curries, juices, smoothies, etc. My absolute favorite for a healthy twist is the brown rice (best brown rice I ever ate), grilled tofu, steamed greens w/ mushrooms and tahini dressing on top – so yum and good for you!

If you haven’t been in Israel before, you might have never heard of Sabich before. Sabich is a traditional Jewish Iraqi pita sandwich, which was ‘imported’ from the Jewish Iraqi immigrants and is now a staple in the Israeli cuisine. The original version includes a hard-boiled egg, but it is equally tasty without.
My favorite Sabich place is Sabich Frishman (were you’ll also find great falafel btw). Basically, what you’ll get is a freshly baked pita bread, filled with fried eggplant, tons of Israeli salad (a mixture of cucumbers, tomatoes and onions), potato, chopped parsley, tahini sauce and amba (a tangy mango pickle condiment popular in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine). In addition to that it can be topped with pickles and hot sauce. This might not be the healthiest food you can find in Tel Aviv but it surely is incredibly tasty and just has to be eaten and tried once in a while!

Fruits are my everything! Hence I always appreciate good smoothie/juice places that just hit the spot during those warm summer days! Tamara is one of those. Although Tel Aviv is full of these little fruit stands, Tamara tends to be my favorite. They serve everything from açaí, to make your own smoothies and juices. If you’re a regular make sure to get your stamp card so that you’ll get a smoothie for free… 😉
The same brand not only has this juice bar but also includes a frozen yogurt shop that serves vegan frozen yogurt (usually coconut/açaí soft serve), topped with as many toppings as you like (already a huge YES!). Highly recommend checking both out!

Ali Karavan/Abu Hassan
Hummus is a simple must when visiting Israel. While there’s hummus places all around the city, hummus does not equal hummus. The best hummus you’ll find in the area of Tel Aviv-Yafo is definitely the one at Abu Hassan. Abu Hassan started out with a small hummus shop in 1959 in the port of Yafo, but due to popular demand, opened another 2 places shortly after.
Also, if you’re only used to eating simple hummus until now, try hummus on a whole new level. The winning plate would be the triple – a portion of hummus, ful (fava beans) and masabacha. Personally masabacha is too spicy for me, but you gotta try it at least once! 🙂
