Most of us have, at some point in our lives at least, thought a bit about ethical choices. Whether that may be connected to ethical fashion (buying second hand or from sustainable fashion brands) or ethical food choices. What about other areas in our lives though? Have you ever thought about ethical interior and materials? I certainly hadn’t. Not until I found atisan ethical interior pieces and started reading a bit about the topic.
Atisan
If you haven’t heard of atisan yet – they’re an awesome company based in Germany that values slow interior, high quality, sustainable materials and traditional artistry. They ship their beautiful products all over Europe and I simply LOVE the message behind their brand!
They make the most beautiful plant baskets, lamps, carpets, wooden boards, dishes and even chairs, while keeping the design rather minimalistic and simple. To check out the full range of their products – click here.
Why slow interior?
In times of consumerism, trends and mass production, atisan focusses on offering an ethical and sustainable alternative by producing high quality goods, where origin and craftsmanship play an important role. Instead of using cheap, damaging materials like plastic that harm our planet, they focus on working with natural materials only, keeping the design organic and simple. Hence, no pesticides will be found in their materials and the wooden materials are solely derived from sustainable sources (e.g. mango wood which is a by product of mango farming and otherwise wasted).
In addition to that, they derive their materials from countries where they are part of the tradition and have been for many generations. Like that, small family businesses and traditional occupations are supported. Since the middlemen are cut out and atisan works directly with the producers, fairer wages and more money is guaranteed for those small businesses.
My new atisan items arrived the other day and I couldn’t be happier with them. Here’s what I got:
- Wooden cutting board Baru
- Sea weed basket Nama
- Sea weed basket Bola
- Stone mugs Badai , blue
- Stone plates Badai, blue
- Stone dessert plates Maya, white
I could honestly order their whole collection though because the handmade pieces are just so stunning and unique and I’m absolutely loving the simplicity of the design!
