Do you ever feel like you’re living too much in your mind, existing in a dream-like state totally disconnected from what’s happening around you? Not being able to appreciate the present and day-to-day activities? Too preoccupied with memories of the past or worries about the future? Well, that has been me in a nutshell these past few months. I’m not gonna lie, with all the moving around, travels and endless search for apartments I have been left feeling like I don’t properly enjoy the present and I’m missing out on so many things in my life.
In these moments I like to take a step back, observe and take a little break from my hectic life. Although I might not have the time to take a few days off and recharge, I’ve found that there are small little things you can integrate into your daily routine that make all the difference and help being more mindful.
No matter how hectic your morning, in my opinion it’s so important to make some time for calm and mindfulness practice when you just wake up. It totally changed the outcome of my day and I hope it will for you as well.
I’ve integrated a little morning routine most days of the week that doesn’t take more than 15-20 minutes and just changed a lot for me. And if that means waking up 15 minutes earlier it’s totally worth it for me.
- Take a seat and be comfortable
I usually start my day with either a large glass of lemon water (in summer) or a cozy cup of my favorite tea and make sure to find a place to sit down where I’m totally comfortable and relaxed
- Set the mood and add feel-good elements
Personally that’s one of the most important steps of my practice. For me that includes lighting my favorite vegan scented candle from my all-time favorite clean beauty brand Acaraa and maybe even putting on some calming music.
Lighting a candle is such a beautiful ritual and this specific one fills the room with a wonderful light note of lily of the valley, jasmine, lemon and vanilla which help with tension, inner restlessness and stress – all the negative feelings I’m trying to reduce in my life. - Feel your breath, notice your body and set intentions
Once you’re comfortable, surrounded by good smells and calming elements – close your eyes and focus on your breath and how your body feels. Take a few deep breath and follow the sensation of your breath as it goes out and as it goes in. Notice how your body feels this morning, where it is tense, aching, sore, and try to relax into your body’s feeling with every breath you take. Finally, set an intention for the day. It can be something general or more precise, but whichever intention you’re setting yourself, do so without judgement.
And that’s it! That’s the practice. It might seem so simple but I guarantee it makes a huge difference. You go away, you come back, and you try to do it as kindly as possible. Just taking a few minutes every day to be more present and mindful can have such an impact on your day! I really recommend you to try it a few times and see how you experience it! 🙂
