As it’s getting warmer in Germany and summer is on the doorstep, I’ve been switching my regular matcha latte to the iced matcha latte version and loving it. Since y’all have been bombarding me with questions about how to make in on my Instagram, I thought I’d finally share the super-easy recipe, which very easily can be converted into a real treat! 🙂
As I’m not very big on coffee, matcha is my go-to drink these days, whenever I need a morning/afternoon pick-me-up. I simply love that deep, kind of earthy flavor and soft focus it brings me after consuming it. Since matcha is high in L-Theanine it provides a natural energy boost without the crash of coffee. Ever since I went to Japan on a vacation, I have been addicted to that stuff.
It took me some time to try out different matcha powders, analyze the differences in quality of taste, texture and color and find one I truly love. If you’re a newbie to the matcha world you might not know that, same as with coffee, there are huge differences quality-wise.
The most potent powder is ceremonial grade matcha. It’s been used for centuries in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and is very vibrant in color, and extremely fine. The leaves are stone-ground, they are blended exclusively for whisking with hot water and drinking on its own. Besides being very cost prohibitive, the refined features of this blend will be lost amongst your other ingredients and should hence not be used in baking etc.
Due to the multiple purposes I use my matcha for (drinks, smoothies, baking, etc.) I personally prefer buying A-grade or culinary grade matcha, which is also fine for cooking and baking, as well as producing a high-quality tea. After having tried many brands, my favorite to this day remains the organic matcha powder from Vivo Life.
Not only is their matcha available in most countries (USA, Europe) but it has an amazing quality, as well a comes completely without plastic-packaging that is home compostable (you can literally throw it into your compost and it will disappear). This is the same amazing vegan company that I’m using for my nutritional supplements (B12, Omega 3, D3) as well as protein powders.
