These homemade nut butters are the best thing since homemade ice cream! I’m seriously addicted. Ever since I discovered how easy it is to make your own homemade nut butters I haven’t gone back to store-bought ones. Made from 1 ingredient only: nuts. Of course you can also add some spices like salt, cinnamon or vanilla to make a fun twist but that’s totally optional! 🙂
The most important piece of equipment you’ll need to make your own nut butters at home is a high-quality food processor or blender. Personally I think that food processors work better for nut butters as you can grind larger batches. My all-time favorite food processor is the Magimix 5200 XL – which is their biggest model. The smaller models are also great as they have the same power and just smaller jugs, so great for personal use.
I probably get asked about 10 times a week which food processor I use for my nut butters so that’s the one! 🙂
Now you might ask – why even bother making your own butters when you can just buy them?
- You can control 100% what goes inside. Many store-bought butters have added sugars, oil or other unnecessary additives. That also means you can create your own flavors adding things like vanilla, cinnamon etc. – so tasty!
- Nut butters are expensive, especially the more special nuts like cashew, pistachio or macadamia. In Germany you easily pay up to 7€ for 250g of cashew butter which is insane because I literally inhale that stuff. Now certain nuts are, of course, always expensive but if you can afford to buy them in bulk they’ll get much cheaper. Here’s what I paid for making the following nut butters:
– peanut: 4,80€ | for 1kg
– almonds: 12€ | for 1kg
– cashew: 10€ | for 1kg
– pistachio: 29€ | for 1kg
- You can decide on the texture. Prefer smooth with a little crunch? Or rather super crunchy? Make them how you love them so you’ll never miss out on your favorite flavors.
Personally I buy the nuts raw, unsalted and unroasted because that’s how they are the cheapest. Then I quickly roast them on 180°C/350°F for 10-15 minutes (depending on your oven), let them cool down, grind and voila. If I want them super smooth I let them grind quite a while, if I want them a bit thicker I grind a little less.
These nut butters are also the perfect gift for loved ones! I regularly buy small cute jars and create delicious flavor combinations to give to friends and family. My favorites are salted peanut, cashew vanilla, almond cinnamon and you can also do fun ‘nutella style’ blends with hazelnuts, cacao, maple and coconut cream – YUM!
